#177 — Mets Rookie Stars (Nolan Ryan / Jerry Koosman)

Ryan shares his famous rookie card with Jerry Koosman. Unlike a modern first Bowman, this is a vintage flagship rookie. Centering, corners, original surfaces, and authentication are essential when comparing examples.

1968 Topps Milton Bradley #177
1968 O-Pee-Chee #177
1968 Venezuelan Topps #177

The four original versions look similar on the front but have important differences in cardstock, distribution, and scarcity. Do not compare a Venezuelan or Milton Bradley example directly with the standard Topps version without identifying the issue.

1970 Topps #712
1971 Topps #513
1972 Topps #595
1973 Topps #220

The 1969 solo card and 1970 high-number issue are significant early Mets cards. The 1971 black borders show chipping readily, while 1973 captures Ryan in an Angels uniform. High-grade condition scarcity can create dramatic premiums even beyond the rookie.

Ryan’s 5,714 strikeouts, seven no-hitters, 27-season career, and cross-generational recognition support a deep collector base. Unlike modern prospect cards, vintage Ryan prices are driven heavily by originality, issue rarity, condition, centering, and grading populations.
